Ah ah ah, you're missing something. I assume he downloaded a mdl, not a gma. A standalone model is different than an addon. It's not that easy to find if it's not shown in the spawnmenu's standard filestructure.

First, look online to verify if you put the model files in the correct directory. Then to actually find the model, I suggest you find the model's internal name and search it in gmod spawnmenu search bar. It should probably appear if you get it right because the search looks at all models. You can then copy a spawnmenu icon of the model into a known spawnmenu folder by dragging and inserting in the wanted folder (don't forget to save changes), so you can find it again easily later.

Or use extended spawn menu that adds a new folder of custom addons in the Q menu, it's more easy

Probably the mods from Garrysmod.org are not working. Why? There is a Steam Workshop and Garrysmod.org is no longer useful. But there are some mods on it that have not yet been re-uploaded on Steam. I have the TF2 Spy model from this site, and normally I can find it and use it. For example, downloading Tony Montana's model will not work. Maybe I did something wrong, idk for me everything looks good here and it should be.

Garry's Mod is a physics sandbox. There aren't any predefined aims or goals. We give you the tools and leave you to play.

You spawn objects and weld them together to create your own contraptions - whether that's a car, a rocket, a catapult or something that doesn't have a name yet - that's up to you. You can do it offline, or join the thousands of players who play online each day.
