If you have purchased a vehicle with a title from another state, or if you have a car that was previously registered in another state, you must have the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on your paperwork checked against the actual VIN on your vehicle to make sure the two numbers match.

The Cranston Police Department has a VIN verification station conveniently located at 900 Phenix Avenue in Cranston, less than 3 miles from the Rhode Island Department of Motor Vehicles Registry.

The VIN station is open Monday - Friday from 7:00 am to 2:30 pm.

There is a $20.00 fee that MUST be paid by check or money order ONLY.

For more information on the VIN station as well as registering your vehicle in RI, please follow the links below.

Owners may not always know their recalled vehicle still needs to be repaired. NHTSA's new search tool lets you enter a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to quickly learn if a specific vehicle has not been repaired as part of a safety recall in the last 15 years.

What this VIN search tool covers:

  • Safety recalls that are incomplete on a vehicle
  • Safety recalls conducted over the past 15 calendar years
  • Safety recalls conducted by major light auto automakers, including motorcycle manufacturers.

What this VIN search tool does NOT cover:

  • Completed safety recall information
  • Manufacturer customer service or other non-safety recall campaigns
  • International vehicles
  • Very recently announced safety recalls for which not all VINs have been identified
  • Safety recalls that are more than 15 years old (except where a manufacturer offers more coverage)
  • Safety recalls conducted by small vehicle manufacturers, including some ultra-luxury brands and specialty applications

NOTE: Recall information provided through this VIN lookup tool is provided by the manufacturer conducting the recall. NHTSA does not record VIN information or results provided through the VIN lookup tool.

UPDATE ON VIN CHECKS: Beginning on September 1, 2021, A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) check is required before registering a vehicle if the title is from another state or the vehicle was registered in another state, and the model year of the vehicle is 2001 or newer.

Applicants should bring the original title, or a copy of the title if there is a lien on the vehicle, along with the vehicle to a municipal police department for this service.

If the title is from another state or the vehicle was registered in another state, and the model year of the vehicle is 2001 or newer, a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) check is required before you register the car.

Please note that the title must be presented along with the vehicle at the time of the VIN check. If you own the vehicle, bring the original title. If there is a lien on the vehicle, bring a copy of the title.

This service may be performed at your local police department. For your convenience, we have provided links to local Police Departments with their hours, locations and fees:
