Changes since the Version 2 are marked in red text to make it easier to see the differences for those who have already read the previous version. If you're wondering why this tutorial has been updated in 2021 and still refers to X8 from 2015, rather than to Version 2021, it's because that's the version I have! If I ever do feel the need to upgrade, I'll use this as a template and update for that version. Meanwhile, perhaps a lot of this information will still be useful.

The following are the changes since Version 2: Installation: Installing Updates and Patches (section added) NewBlue FX: Links updated for online manuals Removal of a few obsolete links where replacements could not be found (not all links have been checked so a few obsolete ones may remain) Minor editorial changes and clarifications (these are not necessarily marked in red)

As a new purchaser and user of Corel Video Studio X8 Ultimate, I found there was a lack of basic documentation such as a Software Installation guide (you get a bunch of files with no indication as to what is what, what order to install them, etc.), how to get the User Manual for the Video Studio software (not included with the installation files), a description of what the various plugins are (those included in the Ultimate package) and where to get the User Manual for those (they are not described in the Video Studio manual), and so on.

So I decided to create this guide as I was figuring this stuff out myself, as it would presumably be of help to other new users (and maybe a little to those already experienced with the software). This guide applies to both Video Studio X8 Pro as well as Ultimate. Corrections are welcomed and I'll edit them in the original post as appropriate.

  1. INSTALLATION FILES AND SOFTWARE INSTALLATION

This installation guide applies to installing from an online purchase and downloaded binaries. Installation from a DVD will be quite different, and most parts of this Section A will probably not apply.

IMPORTANT: If you are upgrading from an earlier version of VideoStudio, or doing a reinstallation, make sure to read Section A.6 below FIRST, so that any libraries or customizations you have made are not lost or over-written by the new installation!

0. Installation Sequence for Updates and Patches (New)

As of March 2016, there were 7 updates and patches published for Video Studio X8, as follows:

2015-03-20: Boris Graffiti plug-in for Corel VideoStudio X8 Ultimate 2015-03-20: Corel VideoStudio X8 Pro/Ultimate Help files 2015-07-06: Corel VideoStudio X8 Service Pack 1 2015-08-06: Corel VideoStudio X8.5 Update 2015-09-01: Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X8.5 Hotfix 2015-11-30: Corel VideoStudio X8 Service Pack 3 (appears to include all the above) 2016-02-11: Corel VideoStudio X8.5 Hotfix 2

The current list may be found at //www.videostudiopro.com/en/support/updates/

The recommended sequence for installation the program, assuming you have the original installation files that do not include any of these updates, is as follows:

  1. Install the 1Main, 2Contents, 3Bonus and BluRay Plugin files (see A.2-A.5 below).
  2. Install the 2015-11-30 X8 Service Pack 3 (see above). This also installs MyDVD.
  3. Install the 2016-02-11 VideoStudio 8.5 Hotfix 2 (see above). This is necessary if you have Windows 7 installed as around this time Microsoft issued a security update to Windows 7 that made VideoStudio X8 non-functional on Windows 7 machines. See //forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=58668 and //forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=58670

Open VideoStudio X8. As noted in A.5 below, it will take a few minutes after opening VideoStudio X8 for the first time for the program window to open. Confirm via Help > About that the version number is 18.6.0.6 (or later if more updates were published since this writing). You can also select Help > Check for Updates to confirm that there are no additional ones (though if there are, I wouldn't be too quick to install them without waiting to see in the Forums if early adopters had problems, given the history of many updates creating more problems for many users than they solved).

1. Installation Files and License Key

32 vs. 64-bit? If you have a 64-bit machine, you probably want to install the 64-bit version of the software as it is supposedly much faster and most people seem to be fine with that. However, you may install the 32-bit version instead, and some people have reported better codec support in the 32-bit version. If you have a 32-bit machine or OS, of course, you must install the 32-bit version.

Recommendation: Even if you are planning on using just the 32-bit version, or just the 64-bit version, I would suggest that you download BOTH version (yes, they are large files, but disk space is cheap ...). The download links are only good for so long, and who knows when you may decide to swap your 32-bit machine for a 64-bit one, or find that you absolutely positively need a codec that is only available in a 32-bit version (and hence only works on the 32-bit installation).

The files you get as part of the installation are:

  1. VideoStudioUltimateX8_32bit_1Main.exe and VideoStudioUltimateX8_64bit_1Main.exe (choose 32-bit if you don't have a 64-bit system and OS). This is the main program file of about 1.3 GB and requires 3.7 GB disk space to install. This file MUST be installed FIRST. If you ordered the Pro, the filename will have Pro instead of Ultimate. IMPORTANT: Many Ultimate distributions in the first few weeks after release incorrectly provided the file VideoStudioProX8_32bit_1Main.exe instead of VideoStudioUltimateX8_32bit_1Main.exe (i.e., the "Pro" binary instead of the "Ultimate" binary, with this error showing up only in the 32-bit version). Despite claims that the Pro and Ultimate are the same, with the difference only in addons in the 3Bonus file described below, they are in fact NOT the same file and this is a real error in Corel's distribution. If you find this error in what you receive, contact Corel support and DO NOT accept an explanation that the files are in fact the same. You should get an "Ultimate" file which creates an "Ultimate" splash-screen when run.
  1. VideoStudioX8_2Contents.exe. This contains additional content like templates, that is included with both Pro and Ultimate. There is no separate 32- and 64-bit version for this file. About 840 MB.
  1. VideoStudioUltimateX8_32bit_3Bonus.exe and VideoStudioUltimateX8_64bit_3Bonus.exe (choose the 32- or 64-bit version as you did before). This is the Ultimate Bonus content and is about 1.5 GB file size (which expands to 1.9 GB upon extraction during setup. You will get this only if you ordered Ultimate.
  1. VideoStudioX8_Blu-ray.exe. This is the Blu-ray writing plug-in and is included only if you purchased it as a separate-cost purchase. There is no separate 32- and 64-bit version for this file either. 4.5 MB file size.

Customer Support says you must install the 1Main file first and the remaining can be installed in any order (although it seems to make sense to install it in the above order). No system restart was necessary.

License Key. You will need one ONLY for installing the 1Main file only (and it's the same one for the 32- or 64-bit version). The other installations do NOT need a License Key, regardless of any misleading information to the contrary that may be in the download instructions you got with your purchase.

2. Installing the 1Main file

Double click on the file VideoStudioUltimateX8_32bit_1Main.exe. You may get an "Unknown Publisher" warning on some operating systems (strange that Corel would have that issue) but go ahead anyway. Unpacks the files and then launches Setup. Note that a folder called C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X8 Setup Files is created for the setup which should NOT be deleted after the setup as it may be required for installing future upgrades or patches. Requires 3.7G (1.3G installation file). You are asked to select your TV standard (NTSC vs. PAL/SECAM) or your country (and it will use the default for that country), although it is not clear why this question is even being asked. There is an easy-to-miss "Option" tab that enables (or not) Automatic Updates, QuickTime and/or Flash support. This installation installs a "Corel Video Studio Pro X8" program group with ScreenCap X8, FastFlick X8 and VideoStudio Pro[sic] X8. Despite this confusing naming (why "Pro" if I bought "Ultimate"?), if you open the program and click on Help > About, you will see that you get the "Ultimate" splash screen (and version number 18.0.0.181 for the 32-bit version) if indeed you bought Ultimate.

It also unnecessarily creates a "Haali Media Splitter" program group which you can ignore (Haali Media Splitter provides .mkv file capability but this is provided internally within the VideoStudio software and the creation of the separate Program Group is an installation artifact). There was no glitch in this installation, other than it gave confusing error messages when it attempted to install an older version of Apple Quicktime than what I already had installed on my computer (you can deselect the Apple Quicktime option to avoid this message, but it didn't give me a problem--it just seemed to ignore the Quicktime installation and installed the main program fine).

NOTE: If you had the X8 trial, you may get prompts or see suggestions that you could skip this installation step and simply enter the license key in the trial software (and then continue with the following steps to install material not included in the trial). Absolutely DO NOT do this! Uninstall the trial and install the full software, as there do appear to be subtle and not-so-subtle differences between the two versions, not to mention differences between Pro and Ultimate (the trial is always the Pro version), and it's cheap insurance to uninstall the trial and reinstall the full version. There are also reports on a few issues that come up if you have X7 installed and want to install X8 in addition (without uninstalling X7 first), mostly on Boris Graffiti (Ultimate version only)--this is beyond the scope of this article, but check out related threads on the VideoStudio forum.

3. Installing the 2Contents file

Double click on the file VideoStudioX8_2Contents.exe. You may get the same "Unknown Publisher" warning as before on some operating systems. This "installation" seems to unpack files for the "X8 Content Pack" only, i.e., it doesn't seem to install any additional programs. There are a whole bunch of .jpg, .bmp, .wmv, .mp4, .ini and other file types that get unpacked, mostly into the "Content" and "EditingStyle" folders of the VS installation.

4. Installing the 3Bonus file (Ultimate only)

Double click on the file VideoStudioUltimateX8_32bit_3Bonus.exe (yes, possibly the same "Unknown Publisher" warning again). This extracts folders and files into the "Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X8 Setup Files\PlugIns" folder, one for each of the Ultimate Bonus content publishers. After unpacking is complete, you get to choose which of the following you want to install:

NewBlueFX (which contains the four NewBlueFX effects packs all in the one NewBlueFX category--you must install all or none of them) Boris Graffiti proDAD Mercalli proDAD Vitascene proDAD Rotopen proDAD Handscript proDAD Adorage Starter Pack

You can also choose "Install All" which is what most people would do (and then "Exit" when all plugins have been installed). The installation proceeds one PlugIn at a time. There was no indication of how much additional disk space is needed for the installation (beyond the initial unpacking of files), but from my disk free space before and after the installation, I estimate 2.4 GB total. There is also a strange DotNetFXSP1 installation that gets executed at the end, which may give you a very confusing choice from Microsoft .net Framework: "Repair (Restore MS .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 to its original state)" or "Uninstall (remove it from this computer)." You should chose "Repair," and it will proceed, for better or worse, to "restore Microsoft .NET framework 3.5 SP1 to its original state." Support says that this is normal behaviour, that what it is doing is installing a customized instance of MS .NET Framework 3.5 just for VideoStudio (which supposedly doesn't affect other programs that use the .NET Framework 3.5) and the Repair/Uninstall dialogue only shows up if your original .NET installation was somehow corrupted or misconfigured (so you may never see it).

You will find two additional Program Groups installed: Boris Graffiti 6 (which contains only a link to the Boris FX website) and ProDAD, which contains a link to the Vitascene 2.0 Manual (but nothing else). So you may ignore these two program groups as well--access to all the Ultimate features is from within the VideoStudio software.

5. Installing the Blu-Ray Plugin

Double-click on the file VideoStudioX8_Blu-ray.exe (if you purchased it). This actually comes from a "known publisher" (Corel Corporation--surprise!). This installation takes barely 1 second.

The total time for the entire installation on my machine was almost exactly 1 hour, which is not surprising for a total of about 3.6 GB of compressed installation files.

It will take a few minutes after opening VideoStudio X8 for the first time for the program window to open, during which time the program does not show up in the Applications tab in Windows Task Manager (but vstudio.exe does show up in the Process tab).

6. Prevent overwriting of your libraries and customizations (on upgrades or reinstallations) (credit lata for much of this information)

If you have created libraries, templates, or other customizations from having worked with VideoStudio for a while, either a previous version or if you are reinstalling the current version, you should backup your libraries before you do an install or reinstall since they have been known to get clobbered unexpectedly. You should also do this before you do a Reset Library (which intentionally zaps the library) or other debugging work. You may also want to do this periodically just as a backup against system or disk crashes and the like. Unfortunately, there is no single file or small well-defined group of files that can clearly be said to contain all library information, but doing the following gives you your best shot at not losing information.

  1. Back up the library using Settings > Library Manager > Export Library Save the resulting file somewhere outside the VideoStudio folders. This is the method most likely to be compatible across versions. They can be restored later with Import Library.
  1. Back up the Application Data folder on VideoStudio. This folder is %appdata%\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro\18.0\ (the value of %appdata% for your system is most quickly determined by typing "echo %appdata%" in a command prompt window)
  1. Back up the VideoStudio Working Folder. This should not be touched by VideoStudio even on a reinstall, but just in case ... This folder should be in something similar to My Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\18.0\ (exact location determined by seeing where your working folder is from Settings > Preferences > General)

7. Known Installation Problems

This section cannot be comprehensive or uptodate, but here are some that have come up so far, along with links in the forum where they are discussed, so you can see if there is a recent resolution if you encounter this problem.

  1. Boris FX (Ultimate) effects not installed for X7 to X8 upgrades

See //forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?t=56083 for a resolution.

  1. Many transitions and FX missing on X6 to X8 upgrade

Seems to be related to proDAD Adorage and Vitascene installers. See //forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?t=56204 for description, discussion and current status.

  1. Boris Graffiti Templates missing.

Not the effects themselves, just the templates (they are, in effect, sample project files showing how to use the effects so not a grave omission). Seems to affect 32-bit Ultimate installations. See forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?t=56169 for discussion and current status.

8. Working Folders (credit lata for a good part of this information)

The following are the folders used by VideoStudio X8, and how they can be customized:

  1. At installation time you will, of course, get a chance to install the program in something other than the default C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X8\ which you can, of course, do if you have a difference convention. Note that you will find additional pieces (third-party Plugins and the like) installed in the following other folders under C:\Program Files\ (in addition to the Corel folder): Boris FX, Inc Haali ProDAD
  1. Application Data (your libraries and so on) are stored in %appdata%\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro\18.0\ (the value of %appdata% for your system is most quickly determined by typing "echo %appdata%" in a command prompt window--on a Windows XP system, this is C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data. Most items are stored within a language-region subfolder here (e.g., en-US). This location cannot easily be changed. Generated ScoreFitter automusic used in your projects is also stored in a ScoreFitter subfolder here.
  1. The Working folder for Video Studio Pro defaults to My Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\18.0\ (using your system-defined "My Documents" folder which you can change globally withing Windows). This is where your new projects, imported and installed Instant Project and other templates (other than the default Corel ones), rendered files, and other items are stored by default. You can change this from Settings > Preferences > General > Working folder. An Audio Working folder for voiceovers is also stored as a sub-folder of the Working folder by default but can be changed in the Audio Working Folder field of the same menu.
  1. Proxy Working folder where a SmartProxy subfolder is created to store temporary low-resolution proxy files used by the SmartProxy feature. Defaults to the standard Working folder above, but can be set independently via Settings > Preferences > Performance
  1. Disk Burning Module temp folder used during pre-burn rendering. Defaults to the standard Working folder above, but can be set independently via Share > Tools > Create Disc > DVD (or BluRay) > Settings and Options (F6) > Preferences

Note that there is a bug where the ScoreFitter "automusic" function creates temporary .wav files all over the place (including in non-Corel folders), and doesn't delete the unnecessary ones either. This is more fully documented in the forum thread at //forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?t=56169

  1. ULTIMATE SPECIAL EFFECTS PACK, BLU-RAY PLUG-IN

1. Ultimate Special Effects Packs. Where are they? How do you know they were installed properly?

The Ultimate Special Effects packs are implemented as plugins from third parties, which is to say that they are all incorporated into the program as additional filters or special effects which are accessed in the same way as are the built-in filters and special effects are, although you may see a different style of user interface once you are in the Customize dialogue of the third-party effect. Since these are done by companies who specialize in effects, they are often superior to similar Corel built-in effects (where such similar effects exist).

The vast majority of these effects are visual effects applied to individual video clips. What is not very well known is that there is a small handful of useful audio and transition effects also included. These are described below.

  1. Video Effects

They are all FX (Filters or Special Effects) and can all be found by clicking on the Filter button (marked FX) in the main Video Studio screen. If you then click on the dropdown menu at the top (default setting All), you can see 7 menu categories named NewBlue <something>. If you click on the single proDAD item in the menu, you will see the five advertised proDAD filter effects in the sub-menu. Boris Graffiti is under the "Special" category in the dropdown menu. Here is what each of them does, in brief: NewBlue FX Essentials IV (10 misc effects + 18 others in Essentials+Essentials II) NewBlue FX Motion Effects (9 misc motion effects) NewBlue Background Generator (24 rather psychedelic distortion effects under Essentials V) NewBlue ColorFast (24 different colour tone effects) Boris Graffiti (36 title effects) proDAD Mercalli (camera stabilization) proDAD Vitascene (dozens of light/mask/artistic effects) proDAD Rotopen (line tracing effect) proDAD Handscript (426 animated titling and background effects) proDAD Adorage Starter Pack (155 misc effects)

  1. Audio Filters

There are six NewBlue Audio filters also included. You access these as you would any of the other audio filters: Double click an audio clip on one of the audio tracks and click on Audio Filter (or Right-click and choose Audio Filter ...). The list will include the following NewBlue audio scrubbers: Audio Polish, Auto Mute, Cleaner, Hum Remover, Noise Fader, Noise Reducer

  1. Transition Effects

There are five groups of NewBlue transitions (each has variations that can be customized), accessed from the "NewBlue Sampler Trans" group in the Transition section. There are also two CATEGORIES of ProDAD transitions under the "proDAD" group in the Transition section. The Adorage category has 155 transition effects, and the Vitascene category has 12 sub-categories with 10 or so effects per sub-category, so let's say 100+ more. You apply the category and then click on Customize to drill down and select the specific effect you want.

2. Blu-Ray creation Plugin. Where is this? How do I know this was installed properly?

Go to Tools > Create Disk. You should see and be able to select a Blu-Ray option there. DVDs can still be created without the purchase of this plugin. In X7 this was included in the purchase, but for X8 it's an extra-cost item.

  1. MANUALS AND DOCUMENTATION

See also the section on Video Tutorials below, for those who prefer to learn by watching than by reading.

1. Video Studio Manual

  1. There is a link in the Help Menu to the PDF User Guide, or you can get it directly from help.videostudiopro.com/videostudio/v18/main/EN/user-guide/corelvideostudio.pdf.
  1. An html/interactive version of this manual is also available at help.videostudiopro.com/videostudio/v18/main/EN/documentation/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm or loaded on your computer at C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X8\en-US\VideoStudioHelp\index.html.
  1. In Help > Getting Started there are 7 one-screen "quick-help" static picture tutorials (with a link to the online .html manual for more details). The 7 subjects are Import Media Files, Trim Videos, Multi-Trim Videos, Instant Project Templates, FastFlick Intro, FastFlick Sharing, Render Movies. It's probably too little for the novice and too basic for the experienced, but hey, it's there.

Note that all the above are for the Pro version. Notes on how to use the additional 10 PlugIns for the Ultimate version are not included in any of these guides. It is also not well documented WHERE you can get these. So if you're the type of person who likes to read manuals, below is the information on finding the documentation for each of these Plugin products.

2. Documentation for Ultimate Plugins

The Ultimate plugins are not really described anywhere in what you get from Corel. Some are simple enough that trying them out pretty much gives you an idea of what it does--others are more complex and a manual would help to take full advantage of the feature. So here is what I've come up with.

They may exist as (i) a help file installed on your system, or (ii) a link to an online manual (HTML or PDF). (There may also be video tutorials for many of them, which are described in the next section on Video Tutorials.) In case (i) (help file on your system), the location is based on the default program installation folder on my Windows XP system (C:\Program Files\) and of course yours may vary.

  1. Boris Graffiti: HELP FILE. Apply filter, then Customize Filter > Advanced Mode > Help > Boris Graffiti User Guide. Also available at C:/Program Files/Boris FX, Inc/Boris Graffiti 6/Documentation/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm INSTALLED PDF FILES. In C:\Program Files\Boris FX, Inc\Boris Continuum Complete 7 for Graffiti 6\Documentation and C:\Program Files\Boris FX, Inc\Final Effects Complete 6.0 for Graffti 6\FEC6 Documentation folders are about 200 PDF files describing each effect in the Boris Continuum and Final Effects packages. It is not clear which of these you have access to via the Corel Ultimate version of Boris Graffiti, but anyway, now you know where to find the files.
  1. ProDAD Adorage: HELP FILE. Not available. ONLINE MANUAL. PDF manual at //www.prodad.de/support/files/adorage-help-en.pdf (there is a section in the manual on using Adorage with Corel Video Studio). You can also get to this page by applying filter, then Customize Filter > F1 (or click ?)
  1. ProDad Mercalli: HELP FILE. Apply filter, then Customize Filter > F1 (or click Help). Also available at C:\Program Files\proDAD\Mercalli-2.0\Resources\en\Mercalli20.chm
  1. ProDad Vitascene: HELP FILE. Apply filter, then Customize Filter > F1 (or click Manual). Also available at C:\Program Files\proDAD\Vitascene-2.0\al\english-default\vitascene-help.chm
  1. ProDad RotoPen: HELP FILE. Not available. ONLINE MANUAL. ProDad Heroglyph PDF manual at //www.prodad.de/support/heroglyph- ... elp-en.pdf (Rotopen is one of the described modules)
  1. ProDad Handscript: HELP FILE. C:\Program Files\proDAD\HeroglyphScript-4.0\tl\english-default\Heroglyph-help.chm ONLINE MANUAL. //www.prodad.de/support/heroglyph- ... elp-en.pdf (Handscript is one of the described modules)
  1. NewBlue FX Sampler Effects: HELP FILE: Apply filter, then Customize Filter > Click ?. Also available at C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X8\en-US\vft_plug\NBSamplerPackEffects.chm
  1. NewBlue FX Video Essentials

HELP FILES: Apply filter, then Customize Filter > Click ?. There are also various Windows .chm help files for the various Video Essentials sub-packages, with descriptive names, in the folder C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X8\en-US\vft_plug\

ONLINE MANUALS: (Note that the original links at legacy.newbluefx.com graciously provided at the time by RobertOZ, were moved, and hence this section was apparently removed by the Admin. After some detective work, I found the new links at //newbluefx.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/ ... y-Products and have consequently restored this section. 9/2021)

The Video Essentials package really contains a selection of FX effects from various editions of NewBlue Essentials. Here are the links for the NewBlue FX filters by edition (note that Corel VideoStudio V8 Ultimate includes only a SUBSET of all the filters, so you may see references in the links to certain filters that are not in VideoStudio--I list under each link only the ones that are in VideoStudio): - Video Essentials (I): //newbluefx.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/ ... sentials-I Color Fixer Plus, Crop Borders (under Sampler Effects), Detail Enhancer (under Sampler Effects), Flash Remover, Pixelator, Sharpen, Soft Focus, Tint, TouchUp, Video Tuneup - Video Essentials II: //newbluefx.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/ ... sentials-2 Chroma Key, Color EQ, Color Swap, Lens Correction, Letterbox (Aspect Ratio), Noise Reducer, Picture-In-Picture, Rack Focus (Tilt Shift), Shadows and Highlights, Vignette - Video Essentials III: //newbluefx.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/ ... sentials-3 None of the effects in the Essentials III package are included in VideoStudio Ultimate X8 bu this link is provided anyway in case someone has these from an older edition. - Video Essentials IV: //newbluefx.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/ ... sentials-4 Bleach Bypass, Day for Night, Drop Shadow, Fish Eye, Luma Key, Magnifying Glass, Reflection, Skin Touch Up, Slide Show (Frame Rate), Time Clock - Video Essentials V: //newbluefx.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/ ... sentials-5 Background Generator (the only one included in VideoStudio Ultimate X8) - Video Essentials VI: //newbluefx.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/ ... sentials-6 None of the effects in the Essentials VI package are included in VideoStudio Ultimate X8 bu this link is provided anyway in case someone has these from an older edition. - ColorFast: //newbluefx.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/ ... -ColorFast Colorfast - Motion Effects: //newbluefx.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/ ... on-Effects Active Camera (under Sampler Effects), Earthquake, Motion Blur, Ripple, Rolling Waves, Shear Energy, Spin Blur, Warp, Wiggle, Zoom Blur - Sampler Effects Active Camera (see link for Motion Effects), Air Brush (no link found), Crop Borders (see link for Video Essentials (I)), Detail Enhancer (see link for Video Essentials (I)), Water Color (see link for Paint Blends or Paint Effects) - Titler EX (No description found under legacy products) - Paint Blends: //newbluefx.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/ ... int-Blends Watercolor (Sampler Effects) - Paint Effects: //newbluefx.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/ ... nt-Effects Watercolor (Sampler Effects)

  1. VIDEO TUTORIALS

1. Corel Tutorials on VideoStudio

These are available at //learn.corel.com/video/courses/welcome (there are different ways of viewing the index but this link gives you the most logical one). There are about 60 videos altogether. Note that the V8 videos cover only the new V8 features and most of the introductory videos are in other sections.

2. Studio Backlot Tutorials on VideoStudio and General Video Editing Topics

This is a commercial site with paid subscriptions, but anyone can get a 10-day free subscription, or a 45-day free subscription for Video Studio X8 customers. Click on the "VideoStudio Learning" icon that is installed on your Desktop, or just go to //www.studiobacklot.tv/videostudio to see the 45-day free offer (you need to enter part of your installation code). There are good videos on VideoStudio X8 basics and "advanced basics." There are many more advanced-topic videos, but these are usually demonstrated using Pinnacle rather than Video Studio; however, once you have the hang of Video Studio, you should be able to translate the tips and techniques yourself.

3. Tutorials on Ultimate Bonus Plug-Ins

They are part of the 60 tutorials listed in D.1 above, but I've listed separately some that have specifically to do with the Ultimate Plugins.

  1. ProDAD Mercalli: //learn.corel.com/video/tutorials/ ... o-Footage-
  2. ProDAD Vitascene: //learn.corel.com/video/tutorials/ ... s-Filters-
  3. ProDAD RotoPen: //learn.corel.com/video/tutorials/ ... Pen-Effect

  6. Boris Graffiti: //www.borisfx.com/tutorials/Graffiti.php

4. YouTube Tutorials

YouTube or Google searches come up with tutorials by others as well, which may complement the above tutorials. I have included above only the manufacturer- or manufacturer-endorsed tutorials, but there are probably additional good ones as well.

  1. TECH SUPPORT AND USER FORUM

1. Official Tech Support

Tech support in the conventional sense is virtually non-existent for Corel. You get a code to use for 30 days after purchase for "installation assistance" which does not cover anything beyond installation issues, i.e., nothing for actually using the software. Even for installation issues, you have only about a 50-50 chance of getting an answer that is actually helpful the first time around--in such cases, you are better off filing a new case to improve your chances of getting a different person. From most helpful to least helpful from the ones I've dealt with, they are: Austin, Steven, Yassar, Inocencio. Having said that, with perseverance you can usually get a resolution to something you ask within the 30-day support window. There is also no pre-sales Tech Support, so for questions during the trial, for example, you're better off using the forum (see below). The website for support tickets is //corel.force.com/support/cSelectP ... lang=en_US (but you won't get far if you don't have a support code number). There is also allegedly an email address CBCorelHelp@corel.com, but email I sent there was entirely ignored (not even an auto-response).

You can maximize your 30-day support time with the following tricks (loopholes, gaming the system, whatever you want to call it):

- Your initial support code comes with your Cleverbridge purchase. If you buy the Blu-Ray plugin, it's a separate purchase and comes with a separate support code. So DON'T buy the Blu-Ray plug-in right away (it doesn't have to be bought at the same time). Wait until your first support code expires, and then the next time you need support, only THEN buy the Blu-Ray plugin. This, of course, assumes that you don't need to Blu-Ray plugin right away. The support code does not seem to limit which product you can request support for.

- There is an orange "Get More Content" button at the top of the Library. From the Corel Guide that opens up, there is a link to register (perhaps after you click on the "Do More" button?). When you register, you get an email with a support code valid from that date. So delay your product registration until the time you next need support (after your initial 30 days, or 60 days if you used the Blu-Ray purchase extension, has expired).

This gets you three 30-day blocks of support time, the first is upon purchase, and the next two can be delayed until the time you really need the support. Needless to say, these loopholes may be closed or restricted at any time, so your mileage may vary ...

2. Facebook Page

Corel has a Facebook page at //www.facebook.com/corelvideostudio which has links to their tutorials, and occasional tips. It seems to be largely a Facebook-oriented (read: Hard to navigate) version of Corel's Video Studio better-organized learning center page. I didn't find it particularly useful. You can make comments on their posts, but few do and they don't seem to be responded to. However there are reports that problems reported there are quickly addressed (so they maintain a good public image), so you may want to try that if all else fails.

3. Corel Video Studio Forum

There is a great Video Studio forum hosted by Corel but populated by knowledgeable and very helpful users of the product (there are no Corel employees visible on that forum nor any evidence that it is monitored by Corel employees). You should register and feel free to ask your questions there. The link is: //forum.corel.com/EN/viewforum.php?f=1&start=0

  1. FREEBIES

1. Corel Do More (credit lata)

From the library view on VideoStudio, click on the Orange "Get More Content" button. Then click on "Do More" (you may need to register at Corel to proceed, but see E.1 on Corel Tech Support for why you may want to delay doing this before proceeding). You can click on "All" or go one by one through the four categories (Templates, Titles, Tools, Graphics). Clicking on each "Download Now" button will auto-install the respective "bonus." If you don't like auto-installs and want to install it yourself one by one, a trick to do so is as follows: Once you have the list of bonus content displayed, disable your Internet access. Then when you click on the Download button, you will get an error message which will include a downlink link where you can download an .exe install file instead. Right click on that link and select Copy Link Location. Then paste that link into a text file. Repeat for all the freebies. Turn your internet back on, and visit each of these links one by one in you favourite browser to download each .exe file, and then install them one by one.

The main problem with these is that when you install the .exe files, it installs a bunch of stuff, and gives you no clue as to (a) what it installed (b) where it installed it (c) how you access it and (d) what it actually does. At best you can guess from the name what it might have done and search your entire computer to find files that got modified at around that time. Perhaps some more title effects got added? Who knows (they're all stupidly named Lorem Ipsum anyway)! Or maybe some sound effects got added somewhere--they may even be pretty cool ones, but good luck finding them. Do the font packs get installed as Windows system fonts? Or somewhere accessible only to VideoStudio? Who knows? Etc., etc. What a shame that for 1/1000 of the time it took to create these effects and templates, no one bothered to write 2 lines about how one would actually find them (let alone use them). So unless you've got lots of time on your hands, you'll find, sad to say, that these freebies aren't worth the time it takes for you to figure out what you actually got.

2. Studio Backlot

The Studio Backlot website (see D.2 under Video Tutorials for the 45-day free VideoStudio offer), in addition to their tutorials, has a bunch of "stock" material (photos for backgrounds, animated video footage, etc.) for download as well. Download as much as you can or want during the 45-day free period.

3. Free Templates

The PhotoVideoLife.com link (provided by asik1) that had a lot of free templates no longer exists, but a simple web search should reveal others.
